Maca Hot Cocoa Mix

We are fans of hot cocoa around here. Usually, I make it on the fly just enough for enjoying in the moment. There is something to be said for having some cocoa mix on hand, however. Not just any mix, something from scratch and as whole food as possible. Something homemade, of course. Maca hot cocoa mix is a perfect balance of sweet treat and superfood nutrition.

Maca

Maca root is an adaptogen that helps our bodies cope with stress. It is also reported to help increase energy and stamina. Maca is high protein, magnesium, and calcium and while also being rich in Vitamins B, C, and E.  A bit of superfood, maca is something that can help make tough days a little easier.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has been enjoying its superfood status for a few years now. It is high in antioxidants, can help reduce stress, helps us focus more, and has some anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, let’s just be honest – dark chocolate is plain tasty. Use a 100% cocoa powder or cacao powder here.

Powdered Milk

Any type of powdered milk will work in this recipe. I’ve made it with powdered coconut milk, powdered goat milk, even the regular cow milk powder. Truly use whatever you like. If you’re giving it as a gift you can customize it for allergies and more.

Sweetener

The recipe calls for 1/4 cup of sugar. I’ve used regular granulated sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, and coconut sugar with success. I imagine some kind of stevia would work but I don’t know the ratio. Brown sugar works but can clump. Use your favorite sweetener. If you made any herbal infused sugar, this is a lovely place to use it.

Optional Flavors

Add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or other favorite spice for a hint of warmth to the cocoa. Feel free to add a pinch or more of cayenne for a Mexican inspired drink.
